Beautiful innovation: the first 20 hours of FF XIII PDF Print E-mail

Final Fantasy games often seem like a mixed bag. One one hand, they tend to take too long to get into; the first ten hours or so always feel like something you have to slog through before things really become exciting. After a while, the battles can start to feel repetitive. They eat up more of our time than we really should allow. But they're also beautiful. And epic. Once the stories get going, they're fascinating. More importantly, they become addictive. Such games are definitely an acquired taste, but they're a delicacy for those of us who have come to enjoy JRPGs.

Transformers: War for Cybertron shows how it all began PDF Print E-mail

Cybertron isn't just the homeworld of the Transformers... it is a Transformer itself. It was the first Transformer. In War for Cybertron you get to explore the Civil War between the Autobots and the Decepticons as they blast their way across the planet. At GDC we were treated to a long demo of the game, and yes, it looks good.

The characters were given all-new designs, and some of them will in fact be made into toys. The game takes place before Optimus gains his "Prime" designation, and shows his early days of gaining the trust of the Autobots; we get to see just how he learned to be a leader on the battleground. On the flip side of things, the game explores how Megatron met Star Scream. "We also explore why Megatron keeps this guy, who is basically a back-stabber, around," we were told. This game is taking the Transformers lore back to basics, and filling in some serious holes.

Or will I go from rags to riches? Hands-on with Mafia 2 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Knight Systems Incorporated, Ghana

With Mafia 2, developer 2K Czech is leaving the optimism to Tony Bennett: this is not intended to be a rags to riches crime story. Don’t expect golden dreams to come true. This is the story of a man trying to keep his head above water, a man who returns to America after seeing the devastation of World War 2 Europe, and tries to make his way in an unforgiving city.

When the game opens, Vito Scaletta has just been granted leave from the war to return home to his mother and sister after his father passes away. Settling a $2,000 ($2K) debt his father owed now falls squarely on Vito’s shoulders, and he’ll need to accept any job from every wiseguy and hoodlum he encounters to make ends meet. It’s a deeply personal narrative, and to hear Denby Grace, the senior producer from 2K Czech, describe his team’s game, it’s more Sopranos than Scarface, more Godfather than Goodfellas.

God of War 3 review: this is the way it ends PDF Print E-mail
Written by Knight Systems Incorporated, Ghana

Kratos wants to do one thing: kill Zeus. It's the only goal that the "Ghost of Sparta" has in the entirety of God of War 3, and everything from the epic beginning moments to the final credits serves to make that happen. If you haven't played the first two games and you have a PlayStation 3, it's worth your time to pick them up and get up to speed on how our "hero" became what he is today. Also, don't skip on the PSP adventure Chains of Olympus.

You can't respect how something ends before you know how it began.

The Opera Web browser has taken a big step forward with the release of version 10.50, a significant update that brings some nice new features and a number of radical improvements under the hood. Opera Software contends that it has taken the lead in performance, leap-frogging its competitors. We conducted benchmarking and some hands-on tests to determine if the new Opera lives up to the hype.

Although Opera was one of the early pioneers of the browser market, it has failed to gain significant traction.

Hail the victorious dead: the first section of God of War 3 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Knight Systems Incorporated, Ghana

Kratos is starting to look long in the tooth. His gruff growl, his single-minded pursuit of the gods, his willingness to destroy everything between himself and his goal... at the beginning of God of War 3 we already know who he is. We know how he got there. The only question for the Ghost of Sparta is simple: what next?

As God of War 3 begins, Kratos is laying siege to Mount Olympus, leading an attack on the gods using the Titans as living weapons. Zeus and a few others look down at the coming threat, and begin their defense. Riding on Gaia's back, aching for blood, it seems Kratos is close to achieving what passes for his dreams.

Snowmobiles are for sissies: a review of Bad Company 2 PDF Print E-mail

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has an easy job on the PC: it just has to suck less than Modern Warfare 2. There have been videos released showing how the game has been optimized for the PC, there is a server browser, the graphical and sound settings can be tweaked and adjusted, and dedicated servers are back!

Of course, you have to rent the dedicated servers from EA's partners, but baby steps... right?

We've played and beaten the single-player game, and there have been multiplayer servers running all weekend to give reviewers and various street date breakers the chance to play with the final code. Considering we've put more time into the multiplayer beta on the PC than the length of most retail games, there is a fair chance that there is something special going on here. Let's take a look.

Most companies, when they go to the enormous expense of designing a complex chip, tell everyone about it. Even a company like Sun or IBM, whose chips are used only in their own computers, unveil the details of their new processors well before products based on those new parts come to market. This is true for game consoles, for SoCs of all flavors, for PC chips, and for most of the rest of the semiconductor industry. It's not, however, true for Apple.

This American Life iPhone app gives fans unlimited content

Fans of This American Life, a weekly Public Radio show hosted by Ira Glass, were thrilled to discover that a dedicated iPhone app had been released. Developed by Public Radio Exchange, the This American Life (TAL) app not only gives users unfettered on-demand access to the show's entire archives going back to 1995, but provides the content in a user-friendly and interactive format.

Now, instead of buying those back episodes for 99¢ apiece on iTunes or getting stuck listening on the Web, you can grab those episodes anytime for a flat app cost of $2.99. We gave the TAL app a whirl—being the huge TAL fanboys and girls that we are—and found that it was definitely worth the money, despite a few of the typical annoyances that come with third-party apps.

Preview: Capybara's upcoming games show off rhythm & pixels PDF Print E-mail
Written by Knight Systems Incorporated, Ghana

When you imagine a nondescript, hot, sticky, and oppressively crowded bar in downtown Toronto, the first thing that comes to mind probably isn't video games. But that's exactly the setting that indie studio Capybara Games chose to reveal two of its upcoming projects, at an event held by the Hand Eye Society—a local group of Toronto area developers, writers, and gaming enthusiasts. The 25-person strong studio had a big 2009 thanks to a pair of hits: Critter Crunch on the PlayStation Network and Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes on the Nintendo DS. Both are puzzle games, both are critical successes. But for its next projects, Capy is going in two distinctly different directions.

Hands-on and under the hood: Testing Firefox on Android PDF Print E-mail
Written by Knight Systems Incorporated, Ghana

Mozilla's mobile Firefox browser is coming to Google's Linux-based Android operating system. Although the porting effort is still at an early stage of development, it is moving forward swiftly. Mozilla's developers achieved an important milestone this week by demonstrating that the browser can run on the Nexus One smartphone.

Due to the highly experimental status of the project, Mozilla has not yet published packages for testing, but that didn't deter us from getting our grubby mitts on the goods. As our readers know, we just can't resist the doughy flavor of half-baked software, and we will gladly brave the bugs for a chance to taste test the new hotness before it really heats up. In order to get our own hands-on look at Firefox on Android, we had to compile it from source code.

A night with the new Battle.net and StarCraft 2 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Knight Systems Incorporated, Ghana

Yesterday we woke up in a world where the beta for StarCraft 2 hadn't been released yet, and we went to sleep in a world where about 1,700 people were playing it. Those aren't tremendously good odds for getting into the beta, but we can only hope more players will be added as things move along.
